It is especially effective in working a specific joint, muscle, or muscle group, and is a good option for clients with specific needs. This massage releases chronic patterns of tension in the body through long slow strokes and deep finger pressure on tensed areas. This technique improves body alignment and freedom of movement. What is Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) ?
MLD was created by Dr. Emil Vodder in Europe, nearly a century ago in the 1930s. Originally designed to treat facial conditions, the modality was discovered to promote healing, reduce scar formation, and research has shown that it benefits over 40 conditions.
The term Manual Lymphatic Drainage describes how the treatment is applied - with hands. In Europe, Certified MLD therapists are found in the finest Spas and Clinics of Lymphology. While it is a manual therapy, MLD is not a massage directed at muscles, and is gentle in comparison. The focus of MLD is on the lymph vessels just below the skins surface that contain your natural healing cells – The Fountain of Youth Within!
MLD is used to drain excess fluid from the body and improve the overall functioning of the lymphatic (immune) system. MLD is most commonly used to treat Lymphedema, which is characterized by the blockage of lymph nodes in the arms and legs.

“What would happen to your car or air conditioning unit if you never changed the filter? It would slow down, be less efficient and eventually breakdown. This is the concept to keep in mind when approaching the lymphatic system with Holistic MLD”…Elisa DiFalco, MS, OT, CLT-LANA
What To Expect & How To Prepare
First, there will be a free in- person or phone consultation discussing your medical history to making sure you do not have any contraindications for receiving MLD. You will then be asked to fill out a medical history. This is available to download and print out here or come 15 minutes early to fill out.
Preparation: Avoid using lotions or products on your skin on the day of your massage. The success of manual lymphatic drainage depends on a therapist's ability to manipulate the skin, and friction is required to do so.
Follow Doctor’s Orders
Drink at least a glass of water before and after treatment.
Avoid junk foods, smoking and alcohol
Specialized equipment: Clients typically undress, leaving panties/underwear on (can wear bathing suit) and lie on a padded warm massage table. Clients will be draped with a sheet or towel during manual lymphatic drainage. The therapist will remove the drape from the areas worked on during the massage. MLD can be administered over post- surgical compression garments.
During an appointment, a massage therapist will use their hands to deliver pressure in slow, rhythmic motions to areas of the body where the lymph vessels may be congested. Because these vessels are just beneath the skin, very little force is required. You may be asked to breathe deeply during certain parts of the massage.
There will be Essential Oils used to enhance and activate the lymphatic system during the session. Diaphram breathing is important at this time.
Areas that tend to require manual lymphatic drainage are the neck, underarm and groin. The therapist begins near these areas and uses specialized strokes.
Manual lymphatic drainage is typically performed on a heated massage table. Depending on your therapist, mood-enhancing candles or various forms of aromatherapy may be present to create a soothing atmosphere.
Recommended sessions: Though a single session can provide noticeable improvement in stress levels, clients with chronic conditions or longstanding injuries may benefit from repeated sessions and is recommended.
It's important to tell your therapist if you are unwell, newly pregnant, taking prescribed medication or currently having any medical investigations. In some cases it may be necessary to request your GP’s consent before carrying out your treatment.
Special Integrative Massage
Detox / Wellness
Swedish massage is the basic technique that most people think of when they think of a massage. Swedish massage features long, graceful strokes which increase circulation and blood-flow, decrease muscle tension, relieve muscular spasm and pain, and reduce swelling and inflammation contributing to a feeling of calm and relaxation. The basic philosophy of Swedish massage is to manipulate the soft tissue for therapeutic purposes to enhance the body's tendency to heal itself. Swedish massage strokes and principles may be combined with other techniques based on your specific needs.
Oncology / Cancer Recovery Massage
This is my most popular massage combination
Integrative Massage draws from a multitude of therapeutic modalities based on the specific needs of the individual. Swedish massage is used to relax and restore circulation to muscles and nerves. Deep tissue manipulation breaks up adhesions in muscle and fascia, which allows the skeletal system to realign itself. Myofasical techniques release the entire system of connective tissue or fascia and Energetic work is used to restore balance between the emotional body, Chakra system, and endocrine centers. An Integrative Massage allows the client to stay deeply relaxed and journey inward to experience a whole body release.
A pleasant Essential oil combination is offered to inhale once during session and at the end a Peppermint oil is offered.
Hot towels can be requested to be used for the feet and hands during the 1 1/2 hr. massage ONLY .

A Blend of Therapeutic Bodywork with Warm Bamboo
Bamboo Massage is an innovative way to provide Swedish or Deep Tissue Massage using heated bamboo to roll and knead the tissue to create an extreme sensation of relaxation and well-being.
The heated bamboo are extensions of the therapist’s hands. Unique strokes (kneading, rolling or crisscross movements) are used as tools to sooth tension, relieve tight muscles and trigger points. Expert hands and the therapist’s knowledge are then used to integrate Swedish or Deep Tissue techniques. The bamboo is heated in a commercial towel warmer and is disinfected per use.
