What is Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) ?

MLD was created by Dr. Emil Vodder in Europe, nearly a century ago in the 1930s. Originally designed to treat facial conditions, the modality was discovered to promote healing, reduce scar formation, and research has shown that it benefits over 40 conditions.

The term Manual Lymphatic Drainage describes how the treatment is applied - with hands. In Europe, Certified MLD therapists are found in the finest Spas and Clinics of Lymphology. While it is a manual therapy, MLD is not a massage directed at muscles, and is gentle in comparison. The focus of MLD is on the lymph vessels just below the skins surface that contain your natural healing cells – The Fountain of Youth Within!

MLD is used to drain excess fluid from the body and improve the overall functioning of the lymphatic (immune) system. MLD is most commonly used to treat Lymphedema, which is characterized by the blockage of lymph nodes in the arms and legs.

“What would happen to your car or air conditioning unit if you never changed the filter? It would slow down, be less efficient and eventually breakdown. This is the concept to keep in mind when approaching the lymphatic system with Holistic MLD”…Elisa DiFalco, MS, OT, CLT-LANA

What To Expect & How To Prepare

First, there will be a free in- person or phone consultation discussing your medical history to making sure you do not have any contraindications for receiving MLD. You will then be asked to fill out a medical history. This is available to download and print out here or come 15 minutes early to fill out.

Preparation: Avoid using lotions or products on your skin on the day of your massage. The success of manual lymphatic drainage depends on a therapist's ability to manipulate the skin, and friction is required to do so.

Follow Doctor’s Orders

Drink at least a glass of water before and after treatment.

Avoid junk foods, smoking and alcohol

Specialized equipment: Clients typically undress, leaving panties/underwear on (can wear bathing suit) and lie on a padded warm massage table. Clients will be draped with a sheet or towel during manual lymphatic drainage. The therapist will remove the drape from the areas worked on during the massage. MLD can be administered over post- surgical compression garments.

During an appointment, a massage therapist will use their hands to deliver pressure in slow, rhythmic motions to areas of the body where the lymph vessels may be congested. Because these vessels are just beneath the skin, very little force is required. You may be asked to breathe deeply during certain parts of the massage.

There will be Essential Oils used to enhance and activate the lymphatic system during the session. Diaphram breathing is important at this time.

Areas that tend to require manual lymphatic drainage are the neck, underarm and groin. The therapist begins near these areas and uses specialized strokes.

Manual lymphatic drainage is typically performed on a heated massage table. Depending on your therapist, mood-enhancing candles or various forms of aromatherapy may be present to create a soothing atmosphere.

Recommended sessions: Though a single session can provide noticeable improvement in stress levels, clients with chronic conditions or longstanding injuries may benefit from repeated sessions and is recommended.

Contraindications are:

It's important to tell your therapist if you are unwell, newly pregnant, taking prescribed medication or currently having any medical investigations. In some cases it may be necessary to request your GP’s consent before carrying out your treatment.

As complement to standard cancer treatments, massage therapy offers both physical and emotional benefits for patients at any stage of cancer care from diagnosis and treatment through recovery. Several studies demonstrate the extensive health benefits of massage including the management of many common symptoms and side effects associated with cancer and cancer treatment. Evidence suggests that it may even help boost the immune system. Massage therapy can safely be provided for most patients with cancer. Treatments will be customized for each patient taking into account the type of cancer, areas that have been recently treated with radiation or surgery and other relevant medical conditions. Close communication between the patient, physician and therapist allows for the safe delivery of massage while maximizing therapeutic benefits.

Clients in the process of receiving cancer treatments, during and post, will be accessed and the level of pressure will be adjusted to make sure your body can accept the massage safely and comfortably afterwards. Later during recovery, you can resume your previous deep pressure if safe to do so.

As a therapist, I am responsive to the needs of my clients. I'm always open to a phone call, text or email for feedback either positive or to report other issues.

RELAX FAR InfraRed Sauna benefits Cancer Prevention & Recovery  !!!!

   In Pregnancy

A sauna used to be thought of as a luxury. Studies now confirm that diet and environmental chemicals cause 95% of cancers. Furthermore, as the first generation of man exposed to such an unprecedented plethora of daily chemicals, we have learned that stored or undetoxified chemicals can mimic any disease. ‘Incurable’ chronic diseases that were thought to have no known cause often disappear once toxic chemicals are gone. Since the RELAX FAR Infrared sauna is the safest, most efficacious and economical way of depurating stored toxins, this makes it a household necessity.”

I recommend using this in combination with Lymphatic massage for a powerful Detox and reduction in Inflammation for your body.

Swedish massage is the basic technique that most people think of when they think of a massage. Swedish massage features long, graceful strokes which increase circulation and blood-flow, decrease muscle tension, relieve muscular spasm and pain, and reduce swelling and inflammation contributing to a feeling of calm and relaxation. The basic philosophy of Swedish massage is to manipulate the soft tissue for therapeutic purposes to enhance the body's tendency to heal itself. Swedish massage strokes and principles may be combined with other techniques based on your specific needs.

This is my most popular massage combination

Integrative Massage draws from a multitude of therapeutic modalities based on the specific needs of the individual. Swedish massage is used to relax and restore circulation to muscles and nerves. Deep tissue manipulation breaks up adhesions in muscle and fascia, which allows the skeletal system to realign itself. Myofasical techniques release the entire system of connective tissue or fascia and Energetic work is used to restore balance between the emotional body, Chakra system, and endocrine centers. An Integrative Massage allows the client to stay deeply relaxed and journey inward to experience a whole body release.

A pleasant Essential oil combination is offered to inhale once during session and at the end a Peppermint oil is offered.

Hot towels can be requested to be used for the feet and hands during the 1 1/2 hr. massage ONLY .

During The Prenatal Massage

Massage therapy during pregnancy is a wonderful complementary choice for prenatal care. It is a healthy way to reduce stress and promote overall wellness. Massage relieves many of the normal discomforts experienced during pregnancy, such as backaches, stiff neck, leg cramps, headaches and edema (or swelling).

In addition, massage for pregnant women reduces stress on weight-bearing joints, encourages blood and lymph circulation, helps to relax nervous tension -- which aids in better sleep -- and can help relieve depression or anxiety caused by hormonal changes.

I will insure that you are comfortable during your massage.A special cushion is available that allows you to lie on your tummy, comfortably supporting you. Also available is sideline positioning with supportive, soft cushions is used to alleviate the extra strain on the lower back and pelvic areas when the pressure of massage techniques are applied. Extra strain in these areas can cause unnecessary back or abdominal pain, so naturally we want to avoid any potential discomfort.

Through the second trimester, you may prefer to lie on your back with a small, cushioned wedge placed under one hip to provide a slight elevation. Depending on where you are in your pregnancy, I may utilize such massage techniques as reflexology, Swedish massage or certain techniques that address your specific requests and needs.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage can also help with your health during your pregnancy.

  • Keep immune system functioning optimally, constipation relief

  • Illness prevention,stress management

  • Reduce edema retention, stretch-mark prevention
