ABOUT LILY VAN HALEN  &  ADVANCED MASSAGE WORKS

Originally from South Florida, I owned “Beauty Care by Lily” for 25 years. While providing services over this period of time, several aspects of my work intrigued me.  Often many clients would come in the door stressed or anxious, but, by the time they left, they seemed relaxed and their mood was improved.  I concluded that the attention and care I gave to them helped to reduce their stress.  I also noticed that, for regular clients, they would reflect a greater positive self-image from these services over time. From those observations, I realized that, even though the beauty services I was providing focused on physical appearance, those effects were connected to physical and emotional health.  As my appreciation for that body-mind connection grew, I also became aware that some products used in beauty care had ingredients that could adversely the affect my health as well as that of my clients.

With these realizations and my long-experience in caring for clients, I began to look for a path where I could focus more on health but still develop the nurturing relationships with my clients that made my work so fulfilling. From those goals, I had the idea to look for work that would help prevent disease and would promote wellness in mind, body and soul.

This path I took led to The Florida School of Massage in Gainesville, Florida, in 2010.  At this school, I undertook a rigorous course of study from anatomy and pathology through various forms of massage or related therapies such as reflexology and neuromuscular therapy.

After I received my massage certification, I decided to pursue specialization in Oncology Massage and additional complementary integrative therapies.  I obtained certification in Complete Manual Lymphatic Drainage Therapy (CMLDT), Scar Management Therapy, and MPS® Pain Management Therapy.

My early experiences and my education have led me to realize how stress can lead to disease and how stressful life can be for women.  I have become a passionate advocate for women and focus on education about the benefits of preventing disease by promoting health.

My mantra is “Massage is not a luxury.” I make massage affordable because I think every woman can benefit from this powerful way to promote health.

      My Massage Practice

The entrance to my studio is a beautiful garden that I designed and personally maintain.  I think the beauty of a garden is the perfect way to trigger a sense of relaxation to help my clients psychologically slow down in preparation for the massage.  I designed my studio to be comfortable and, through art and music, to create an atmosphere of serenity to further promote relaxation to drive away any stressful feelings or tensions.

The session begins with my listening closely as you describe any symptoms you've been experiencing, and I note what areas of your body you'd like me to focus on. During the massage, I check with you to make sure that you are comfortable and I adjust my technique as needed, for example using greater or lesser pressure. It is my goal to use massage to eliminate stress from your body.

I call my practice Advanced Massage Works because massage works and because I have advanced my skills in massage to specialize in promoting health.
